lol! No, people in China do not say 'let's order American'. If they want fast food, they will likely name the restaurant like we do - "mai dang lao" = McDonalds, and "ken te ji" = Kentucky (meaning KFC). Or they may say "ham bao" = 'hamburger'.

Chinese have asked me if we eat hamburgers every day in America. I guess we must give that impression!

In Hong Kong, ppl don't say "lets order American Take out" (when i read of this, im thinking "take what?" lol) later i realized mean fast food.
here Mcdo, KFC are really cheaper, not as the above "Ben" said, ppl dress up well to eat Mcdo KFC. even in Mailand China, ppl earn very less per month. lol. it is so common here in HK, i bet is cheaper than in US. with USD 1 can get a double cheeseburger.
KFC is bet expensive than Mcdo, but still affordable, for me personally, i hate KFC, cuz i support PETA (sorry, im not a real veggie)
Pizza Hut is expensive than KFC, but we won't go that much cuz it is very heavy, ppl in HK love to keep fit, eating heavy fat pizza is not a best choice :P

In China, American food is typically associated with KFC, McDonalds or Pizza Hut (unfortunately, this seems to be all that most Chinese people associate with western food).

These American chains are very expensive by Chinese standards. A chicken burger meal from KFC can be as expensive as dinner for two at a small Chinese restaurant. This means that American food is really only affordable for rich Chinese people, and is somewhat of a status symbol. More likely, you'll have Chinese people eat in the store so that they can show off their wealth (yeah, I'm being somewhat cynical here). I've never seen a drive-through fast food chain store here in China, and I very rarely see Chinese people in American fast-food chains in China ask for their food to be packed for "take-away".

In China, places like Pizza Hut are seen as quite exotic. People get dressed up nicely, and will queue up for a table. To foreigners, this seems really amusing... but a similar effect applies in foreign countries. Really bad Chinese food can get rave reviews in the USA, simply because it is exotic and different.

nah, simply go to fast food restaurants. Sometimes they don't really call it as "American", but Western food which will include Europe and America. At their economic level, McDonalds, KFC, and Pizza Hut could be expensive sometimes.
