if you intend camping "in the hills" yes it will be cold at night - bring a very warm sleeping bag, gloves & beanie,
you can camp at Binna Burra or O'Reilly's if you like bushwalking - goes down to about 0c at night.
tonight it's 6c in coastal areas.
for camping try the caravan parks - many of them have campsites.

There are still morning frosts around inland so be prepared for cold mornings. Days, however, are warming up and the weather is beautiful in northern NSW although we need some rain. Every small town has a camping area and most national parks do too so you will have no trouble finding somewhere to pitch a tent. The lack of rain and the frosts have dried the country out so bushfires are a danger. There is also a lot of burning off taking place. Be careful with fires, they could get away from you quickly.

There is lots to see and do both on the coast and inland. If you are not fussed about beaches, a lovely inland trip is to head north from Sydney and turn left onto Bucketts Way just north of Raymond Terrace. Drive through Gloucester and Walcha to Uralla and then take the New England Highway to Tenterfield. Turn right at Tenterfield and drive to Tabulam on the Clarence River. Turn left through Bonalbo and Woodenbong to Mt Lindsay and Beaudesert. Turn right at Beaudesert for the Gold Coast. If you want beaches then the Pacific Highway is the route to take.

Ma Nana,
Great time to go camping, Zero overnite and 10 during the day, but a week is;nt all that long. I have just come back from 8 weeks in QLD to sunny VIC. The caravan parks we stayed at were great, did'nt come across many camping sites, but I think you should go to Byron Bay, that will keep you entertained big time, man, like the place never sleeps/stops. Way to go!!! YEH

I am not sure if the YHA (Youth Hostels Association) is still active. If it is, then I would strongly suggest you enlist.

It was fun when I did. You are able to stay in places that are so inexpensive, and get to meet fellow budget travelers. On the bulletin boards, you will see postings of people wanting to go somewhere, needing company and share with petrol. Be careful though, but let this not spoil the adventure.
