Planning our wedding, got most of the big things taken care of, now trying to figure out the small things... right now it's music. I'm planning on having music during cocktail hour, and obviously the dancing part, but when else is music normally played (entrance, cake cutting, flower/garter tossing, etc)? Both of us are more into classic rock and country music, and our song is I'll Stand by You by the Pretenders.
I really want Keep Your Hands to Yourself by Georgia Satellites played sometime, but not during the dancing, any suggestions when?
Also, any other suggestions of any good classic rock songs? I really want to stay away from stuff like Stairway, and nothing Elvis-y. Any help is greatly appreciated!!!

I think music is typically played throughout the reception, although maybe softer during dinner, and perhaps not during the flower/garter tossing or cake cutting, if you want full attention on you (although I think I've been to weddings that had light music in the background during cake cutting). For the entrance, usually people do a fun song, so "keep your hands to yourself" could work there (or it might be funny during the garter part). Have fun!

a lot of times music is played during your entrance. i haven't really seen a lot of music during the cake cutting or the flower/garter throw but you could always use the "keep your hands to yourself" song during the garter throw. I think that would be really cute actually.

Police - "every breath you take" is a classic but if you're looking to stay away from too popular, it might be a little too overdoone.

The Beatles, of course,

Rod Stewart has a lot of fun songs to dance to,

The Stones - "miss you" is another good one

Stevie Wonder - "my love is with you" or "everytime i see you i go wild"

Bobby Darin - "mack the knife"

oh, and Prince is always amazing although i'm not sure if you would catagorize him as classic rock. i hope i helped some.

Oh the PERFECT time for Keep your Hands to Yourself is the garter removal. That would be hilarious! Right as he is going up your leg it gets to the chorus, keep your hands to yourself.

You are into the classic rock of course you are going to have Stones, Zeplin, Eagles, Queen but I'd be careful with the Dead and The Who--as you don't want too many drug references. But some of their songs are wonderful. Perhaps Bruce Springsteen. A lot of good Fleetwood Mac. Van Halen, ZZ Top and the "cities bands"--Chicago, Boston. Which always reminds me of Kansas. Steppenwolf.

Also for slow dances there were so many great monster ballads from the 80s that would be great. Allman Bro, Blue Oyster Cult, Poison, Whitesnake.

Hope some of these artists help you out.

Music is pretty much played during the whole reception except for when there are announcements or during the toast. You should go over all of this with your DJ. It is the DJ's job to guide you through all of the events, give you suggestions, tell you when music should be played, and MC everything.

There is a great site called The Best Songs.net that talks about all types of wedding music.

Their wedding page can be found at http://www.thebestsongs.net/wedding_songs.html

It lists songs by decade and genre as well.

The same advice I gave to a poster before you. "Rockabye Baby" has lullaby renditions to rock music. So, if you like the Beatles, Eagles, Zepplin or Floyd, it would be great for you. They have 20 CDs in all. So go to iTunes and make a cd!

I think that the neatest wedding song I've ever heard was a friend of mine had her Father Daughter dance "When you say nothing at all" by Alison Krause. It was so beautiful.
