In brief: No.
HDMI refers to a connection technology that carries high definition signal as well as audio on a single cable. It's pretty handy and provides an all-digital path for your media.
That your DVD player supports HDMI only means that it's got a nice connector on it. It may also support upscaling of SD picture to HD resolutions.
But this is not the same as having an HD-DVD player. If you don't see the HD-DVD logo:

You probably don't have a player that supports HD-DVD media.

NO.
To play HD DVDs you need an HD DVD player. A standard DVD player with HDMI can upscale standard resolution DVDs to the resolution of your TV, but HD DVDs are a completely different format.

ABSOLUTELY NOT. You need an HD DVD Player or A BLU RAY or better still something that is more affordable called HD VMD Player. This HD VMD is yet to hit the market - but the buzz is that it is the best and least expensive High Definition player to hit the markets.

Most probably you have an upconverting DVD player.
Unless your DVD player has either the HD DVD or Blu-Ray Logo, it CAN'T play HD DVDs.
