If people wanted to know facts about the history of religion (and Athiesm is directly related), they would go to a religious web site, an encycopedia, etc..

The great thing about Yahoo Answers is that it is an actual world wide conversation that is happening amongst people of different backgrounds.

At a party, I can't just ask a Christian, a Jew, a Muslim and an Athiest to discuss religion and God. The situation doesn't arise very often. And, in many social situations, that would be considered rude. It's not easy to find a group of people from different backgrounds who are willing to discuss the similarities and differences in human thought on the subject. That can be safely done here. We don't know each other in person for the most part, typing requires taking time to think--for the most part!--and people sign on to these boards for the specific purpose of communicating with other people.

What I really can't get is why so many people as the question you just asked. Why do you sign on to this board? If your hope is to find like minded people, why not just go to church?

I enjoy the study of all history. I am going to disregard all of your Ifs and is its and give you an honest answer. I did not, for several reasons, enjoy the educational opportunities available to many of you. During my working life I had to devote the majority of my time to working and my study time involved my craft(s). I am retired now, and can study what I please. One of the studies I enjoy is religion in general and the bible in particular. The reward is my personal enjoyment. Atheism is the belief that there are no gods at all and that whatever comes about is caused by the human race rather than some deity. I am quite sure about my beliefs or lack thereof and if this explanation does not help you "get it" I don't know what else to say.

If Christians are not homosexual, why do they spent time in the Gay and Lesbians section?
If you are not a closet homosexual, why bother spending time on it?
If you don't believe in the act of homosexuality, would you try to stop people from doing it?
Is it because all christians are homosexual but not really sure?
If is because they fear to get out of their closet and to look for comrades?
Homosexual believe if you love someone, even of the same sex, you have sex with him/her, what is the reward for christian?
Is Christianity a perverted form of closet homosexuality itself?
I really can't get it ......

(The above are not meant to belittle homosexuals or Christians, but to rewrite what you had written and replace the scenario to it's counterpart for your answer. If you can answer these questions, you know the answer for your own questions.)

---------

For Caroline below ..... the door swings both ways, can you tell me confidently Christians do not do such things as you had mentioned? I had seen questions directed at buddhism, yet christians write things like

"Why do you believe a fat man, you should believe in jesus. The fat man is dead and jesus is alive"

I had seen questions directed at atheist, yet christians write things like

"they are the satan's child, they believe in the devil"

As mentioned, sweep your own backyard before accusing others.

I've wondered the same thing myself. When I was an atheist I don't think I would have harassed theists because what would be the point? I might think they were idiots, which I did, but why would I make fun of them or answer religious questions with put-downs and name calling?

I am sure that there are lots of atheists who are not responding to the R&S section with harrassment, because I know a lot of people who are atheists and I know they are nice people and would never be offensive like this.

If you are so insecure that you can't have your beliefs questioned, this is not the site for you.

I like to know why people think like they do, and I answer questions about atheism. By the way, atheism is not a religion, but a lack of belief - just like I wouldn't say you have a religion because you don't believe in my imaginary friend.

When others' beliefs affect my life, whether they're trying to force it on me or legislating absurd laws because they think their God would like it, I feel the need to question.

Some Atheists just have to make a comment, even when there is a question directly asked of Christians about their understanding of scripture. The usual answer is something to the effect that "there is no God" or "the bible is a just a book of myth" or whatever. The more respectful ones don't comment on those type questions.

Atheism is the rejection of religion. That means it is ABOUT religion. So this is the place to talk about it. And this question gets asked like 50 times a day. Are you guys really that insecure that you can't take criticism?

Believers (mostly self-proclaimed "christians") spend a lot of time here lying about atheists, lying about science, lying about history, lying about all sorts of things. They exhibit an appalling lack of understanding of a variety of subjects, combined with a desire to spread their hallucinations of reality without regard for the well-being of others. Some of them go so far as to advocate violence. Someone has to counter the lies and willful ignorance.

Note that not all believers here are mean-spirited or dishonest. I think MELicious (hope I spelled that right) has a good take on this.

Some of them do that to try to make people be an Atheist, but I don't even bother because I don't want to ask a question and then get a whole bunch of people saying "There is a god!" or even worse, "You will burn in hell" or "Read the bible, child!"

People just don't think, I guess.

If they're planting bamboo, I'd possible try to stop it. That stuff is invasive and difficult to kill once it takes hold.
Beyond that, there are many reasons. Most notably;
Christianity interferes directly with my life.
Belief in God curtails human imagination.
Religion allows people to evade responsibility for their own actions.
This is the 21 century, it's sad to think a majority of our population has a 15th century mentality.
