Jesus said, “No one is good—except God alone.” (Mark 10:18) The human mind cannot comprehend the Divine Mind of God. We are not capable to understand everything about God. This is why we need to have faith that God know what’s best, even when it hurts. Usually when bad things happen to people, this draws use closer to God. The bible says, “Indeed, in our hearts we felt the sentence of death. But this happened that we might not rely on ourselves but on God, who raises the dead. He has delivered us from such a deadly peril, and he will deliver us. (2 Corinthians 1:9,10) God wants use to trust and turn to him. We do not have salvation without God. We are just a tool of God’s work. If we do something good, that does not mean we are good person. Our righteousness only comes from God, which works through us. We are guided with the Holy Spirit.

So we need to rephrase the question to, “why do good things happen to bad people?” The answer to this question is out of God’s love. For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. (John 3:16) But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. (Romans 5:8) Jesus died for us out of love for his creation.

Isaiah 64:
6But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.

I know that the Bible says that God alone is good. You know as well as I do that the definition for good has softened in the general use of the word...

I don't know why bad things happen to people who do good things... and I can't attribute it all to sin, character building or anything... We will know when Jesus comes back but right now we need to get through it and then try to overcome it.

Don't overcome evil with evil, but overcome evil with good.

You're right...there is none good, no not one.
Thank God for Jesus..he makes a way for us to approach God because of his sinless sacrifice.

The word tells us, the rain falls on the just and the unjust...
but Jesus give us comfort in trouble. And makes a way of escape for us out of temptations.

"good" in that verse define as sinless. What people meant by good when asking "Why do bad things happen to good people" is different. Apparently you are unaware of the different meaning of good.

1 Timothy 4:4

"For every creature of God is good, and nothing to be refused, if it be received with thanksgiving"

Your explanation boils down to "God loves us and knows what is best"? That could work, I guess. Here's some other suggestions: original sin, free will, the redemptive nature of suffering, the devil, temporal punishment for sin.

Satan is trying to tempt them to turn away from God. He does this to people who beleive in them to show them that following God is "bad".

This stuff only makes sense if you assume existence of BibleGod.
Which makes about as much sense as the toothfairy.
So in reality, you are putting your faith in the church, a completely secular business institution.
