It really depends on what platform you work.

If you work on jets, you'll be out just as long as anybody else on that carrier.

If you work on a land-based aircraft (P-3 for example) you will be deployed when that aircraft gets deployed. With P-3s specifically, you might not continuously be deployed as long as somebody on a ship, but you're likely to be gone more days out of the year than anybody on a ship.

It depends on what platform you work on. But typically yes. The ship based platforms (VFA, VAQ, VAW, VRC, VS, HSL, HSC) you will be assigned to a airwing assigned to a ship and you will typically be underway with the ship when it it underway. You may also do some land based detachments. Land based aircraft (P-3) usually will do 6 month deployments to overseas bases. The VR communites (C-130, C-40, C-9) typically do 1-3 month deployments to overseas locations.

I was deployed for six months, but only on one stint.

It really depends on the platform you are working on. If you work in AIMD, you might get attached to a carrier, which may deploy for six months at a time. If you work in O level maintenance, paraloft, or AW rates, it will depend on the platform (aircraft type), squadron mission, and job you perform.

For example, our squadron had Aviation Ordinanceman, but their purpose was to train us as qualified ordinance handlers and would never be deployed to a ship.

absolutely. there are aviation ratings assigned to ships and even if they aren't, they still go TAD to them for deployments all the time.
