i heard somewhere that they began during world war 1 or 2. but my dad seems to differ saying they started during the vietnam war.

so can someone clear this up for me please?

Civil war actually

In order to help pay for its war effort in the American Civil War, the United States government imposed its first personal income tax, on August 5, 1861, as part of the Revenue Act of 1861.

You're both wrong. Federal taxes are as old as the nation. Federal income taxes date back to the Civil War, on and off. In 1913 they became permanent. The current tax code, as amended, was enacted in 1954.

Actually, federal taxes existed from the birth of the union, when the constitution was ratified.

Are you talking about the federal income tax?

It was at least as early as the civil war... not sure...but was started to fund the war...was voluntary and was supposed to be temporary! Give them an inch and they take your wallet!
