I have heard this many times... "give it to God"... "Offer it up to Him"... "God has a plan"... "God will take care of this"...

Whereas God may help and support us, shouldn't we do our own spiritual work and healing? When things get too difficult or uncomfortable do you just pass your problem on to God and do nothing? Do you find yourself wondering why God never answers your prayers?

Ive been through periods in my life when I was suffering so much I had to fight the urge to attempt suicide. Though I believed in God at the time, these periods in my life caused me to lose faith in prayer. I turned mainly to books to help me better understand why I was suffering. I found that as my awareness increased my suffering began to be lifted. As I look back I see that the root cause of my suffering was ultimately my own ignorance. As time passes the need for a God has been slowly leaving me and I find that life has become much less confusing. Its much easier for me to believe that that is just the way life can be sometimes than to try to believe that some ultimately loving God was trying to teach me lessons. I think people who believe that you can simply give your pain to a God or that it is part of a plan havent suffered in the way that I or many others have. Those kinds of ideas didnt make me feel any better and are why I highly doubt his existence today. Today my solution to suffering is to strive for ever greater self awareness and Im much more content today doubting Gods existence than I was when I believed in him.

No. When I pray, God gives me guidance and wisdom about what to do about the situation, and that's what I do. God answers prayers.

I don't, but I know a lot of people who do. They "give it" and then think it is gone. They never really see the problem get solved. Or, you could look at it scientifically and think that because it was ignored, it wad forgotten about and therefore not a real problem at all.

when I was Christian, I would pray to god and it made me feel better. sometimes things would even come true (I eventually got boobs...).

but what I realized is that it was just the time that I spent praying, reflecting on my day, and looking inward that made me feel better and made me make changes...not god.

now even as an atheist i will "pray", more like meditate, before I go to bed, just to rest my thoughts.

prayer can be used as praise, WORSHIP, giving your problems to G-d, or just talking to Him. He loves it when people just call to say hi.
P.S. G-d always answers my prayers.
