I'm doing a play and I want to get it right. The character is supposed to speak with an "Estuary" accent. Any tips?

Think of Estuary English as "London middle-class and working-class English" this is not the same as Cockney.

If you not performing for a British audience, just take a Cockney accent and tone it down a bit. Most people won't be able to tell the difference.

Another option would be to think of Stan Laurel (Laurel & Hardy.) Although Stan Laural was born in Cumbria in NW England, most people will not be able to distinguish his accent from a SE English accent... Especally if it is a stage accent.

Watch a lot of English TV shows or listen to the BBC. The English have different accents, just like we do in the US, so just make sure you get the correct one.

PS## It would be great if you could manage to get the accent correctly. An English accent is very cool!!

It's not that hard...it'll sound cheesy to the real McCoys by the way.
Just watch a Brit movie or w/e, and analyze the way they speak.

There are dialect coaches for just that purpose. Contact your local college theatre department to help you find a coach.
