Metabolism............

The foods you eat cannot be used by your body while it remains to be in its original form. It has to be broken down.

The food in your digestive system therefore has to undergo chemical changes to break down the foods into substances that your body can utilize. The foods molecules will break down into smaller units and release energy.

The large molecules such as protein will be broken down into amino acids, the nucleic acids into nucleotides, the polysaccharides to monosaccharides, the fats and lipids into fatty acids, the vitamins into coenzymes, and the minerals into electrolytes.

Those broken down substances are now ready as source of energy that will supply all the needs of the body to sustain life.......That explains the CATABOLISM - which is the first category of metabolism where the foods are turned into a form that can yield energy.

NOW...The cells of your body have many components such as proteins and nucleic acids, etc. All of those components have to be constructed using energy. So your body uses the energy ( produced by catabolism) to construct all the components of cells. That explains the ANABOLISM - the second part of the metabolism process which tends on building up organs and tissues.

The above process explains what metabolism is. Metabolism therefore is a complete set of chemical reactions that sustains life - breaking down the food into simpler molecules the body can make use of to allow the cells to grow and reproduce and maintain its structure to be able to continue to live.

The human body is a huge chemical engineering factory and metabolism is the process responsible for energy, tissue function and repair.

metabolism is simply a chemical process that food undergoes within the body. food is digested and treated by the body to break it down into usable forms or converting already usable forms to non-usable forms for storage. in short metabolism is Bio-transformation (e.g. transforming food into the things the body needs to work)...

metabolism takes the nutrients "energy" and stores it as energy, like winding up a spring, which is later released when called upon.
