Bandycat- if God is telling people to kill and then has a commandment that says don't kill doesn't that make him hypocritical or very indecisive. That is like Ghandi who was peaceful going out and commiting mass homicide it doesn't make sense.

Because people can use different things in the religious writings to justify fighting. Often the words are taken out of context and sometimes they aren't even in the religious writings, but a great orator can often create excitement and fervor over things that don't exist....look at Hitler, he blamed all of Germany's problems on one race and the people stood behind him.

you have a valid question.
it goes back the core values that someone has. In this country, generally everyone has a similar core belief that life is sacred and should not be taken. Keep that in mind.
Next you get to the people within any group that have their own views of right and wrong. Some groups think that they are some special gift to mankind, and they are above the laws that apply to everyone else. These are very scary folks.
Now combine this idea of core values with being something special and above the laws that apply to everyone else and you have the makings of a dangerous group, especially if they think they have some special commission from God to do the things they are intent on doing.
If you want to be intellectually honest, you can look up hamaskateers and read the reports on the Palestinian effort to make every child into a potential suicide bomber and / or killer of the Jews and all that support them.
You will find that the some arab cultures as a rule as well as some others do not have the same respect for life that we do in the western culture. Our values are based on the fact that we are all created equal before the LORD and life is sacred because we are created in the image of God. Our values are based on the bible.
take the same folks i'm talking about now, with a biblical structure, warp and distort the truth of the bible, and give them a reason to go do some criminal act and say God says this is what to do, and you have a bad situation. After all, isn't God the supreme authority?
It is sort of like this for the jihadist. The are a political force with a commission from what they worship. In islam, islam is what matters, not the individual. They are prepared to defend islam and even to expand by war all in the name of whom they worship.
You can admire or you can hate people that do these things. But you better respect them as with a rattlesnake, it does not have to strike you to carry deadly potiencial.
It would serve all of these people to actaully read the bible and see what Jesus says about people killing in his name, he says, they are not mine, I do not know them.
that is very scary.
as for asking an atheist as one post suggested, I know a lot of them. I have never gone to any of them to learn the truth of the world around me, they are limited in their scope of practice by prejudice.

Religion doesn't cause anything...I read another question similar to this one, but I still come to the same conclusions. People and Conscientiousness. People "use" religion to justify certain actions period. The Bible principles as well as the Koran's or any doctrine can and will be twisted to fit a particular circumstance. That's reality. That is why one Muslim group will say terrorists are wrong and another Muslim group will say they are right. Same with Christianity and the Inquisitions the Church justified the slaying of thousands of people to "convert them" when clearly the Bible stated that killing is wrong.
So Is it "Religion" really? The answer is no. People make choices based on doctrine. The "doctrine" itself does nothing. This may seem silly but as long as I have lived I haven't seen any books/doctrines wield their swords and fight. Stop blaming religion for these problems...its people. It amazes me when something is great everybody wants to take the credit, but when something goes wrong...its the Blaming Game. The answer has been and will always be People.
con·science /ˈkɒnʃəns/ Pronunciation Key - Show Spelled Pronunciation[kon-shuhns] Pronunciation Key - Show IPA Pronunciation
–noun
1. the inner sense of what is right or wrong in one's
conduct or motives, impelling one toward right action: to
follow the dictates of conscience.
2. the complex of ethical and moral principles that controls
or inhibits the actions or thoughts of an individual.
3. an inhibiting sense of what is prudent: I'd eat another
piece of pie but my conscience would bother me.
Fortunately and unfortunately conscientiousness is shaped by our environments and experiences as youth. So no one's is the same. While we as humans group ourselves according to what we believe and who we get along with, we all still have different consciences.
Ex. If you have a group of atheists in a room that are planning a project and it is a success they will mostly likely all want to take credit and or part of the success. However if this same group's project fails a very few if not anyone will want to take responsibility.....But we will know for certain that they will not blame god/religion for something going good or bad because they don't believe.
Bottom line is it is in our human nature to want what is good for ourselves.
Religion is nothing but doctrines rulebooks that "people use" for either good or bad.

The question is flawed:
Religions do preach violence.
The fact that John D Ayer (in his response above) completely ignored the question and instead suggests 'ask atheists about violence" does not change the fact.
OK, let's assume you asked me about violence. I will answer:
Violence is done in the name of religion, for crime, and for fundamentalist causes. People don't kill people for atheism.
People kill people for things like money, religious fervour, fundamentalist ideologies (statism etc), terror, politics, land or because of psychological disorder.
Ignoring any religious violence is willfully dishonest. History and the present is rammed with it, from burning and stonign women and apostates, to infighting and geocide between different faiths.
Intellectual dishonesty is bad.

You seem to be confusing 'all religions' with the pacifists, such as Mennonites.
Even other varieties of protestants feel that there is a time and place to be violent. And holy war is historically a basic element of both Islam and Hinduism. Then Buddhist Myanmar is presently one of the most violent places in that part of the world.

That would be man's abuse.
violence in the name of God....violence in the name of nationalism.... violence in the name of a political party... violence in the name of ethnicity.
Bottom line...violence isn't always about religion.
Religion is about rules. Christianity is about relationship. Surrendering to the Prince of Peace. I'll try to read the four Gospels again...but I'm not finding any "go kill in My name". Instead, I find "turn the other cheek".

This is because religions say no violence to those within that re legion. If a person is on the outside then then don't count as a person so it is all right to commit acts of violence against them.
Look at history people out side the relegions are always called something insulting and lowering.

Religion is man made and corrupt (as a whole) God isn't. People do atrocities in the name of God under the guise of religion. Often "religion" is used by governments as a tool used to control people ie: Middle East. God's name just gets tossed in there, but the atrocities are in fact anti-Christ and DEFY what God represents or commands of us.

People find chapters and versus in their religious books that support or seem to support their cause. They teach this with ultimate force. Instead of teaching to, " love thy neighbor as thyself", they pick a verse that shows it is alright and what God wants them to do. And then tell anyone who will hear them about it. Although they prey on those who cannot or will not decide for themselves. Hope that helps.

I think this topic has been covered ad nauseum. The simple answer is that religion is used as the excuse for war by unscrupulous people who aren't really believers in anything but themselves. It's all about the religion of "power". If there was no such thing as religion, there would still be the same wars...they'd just have new justifications.
