I downloaded a soundwav recorder called Recordpad, but it doesn't allow me to edit how big the file is. It's pretty much a plain jane recorder. I'm not looking for anything fancy but just something where perhaps the .wavs won't turn out as a huge file to the point where it will take a long time to download. Anyone know where I can download a free decent sound .wav recorder?

I'm not sure what you mean by "download". Are you trying to download sound files from a website? Whatever they have on the site is what you get. You can't really convert the file format before it is downloaded. You could send email to the webmaster like "Hey, Dude, why not use MP3? Are you trying to choke up the whole bandwidth or what?" But that never works so you just have to take what you get.

If RecordPad saves files as .wav, they will always be big. You are never going to find a smaller .wav because .wav (and .aiff) is uncompressed. Simply stated, it's the whole thing so it doesn't come in different sizes. The only thing you can do is convert the files to a compressed version and delete the big original. Here is how to do that:

First, add the .wav files to the iTunes library. Then import them as either .aac or .mp3 and the result will be 1/3 to 1/4 the .wav size. After that, just delete the .wav files. Step by step:

Open iTunes, go to iTunes > Preferences > Advanced and select "Importing". Then set "Import using..." to either .aac (better quality but Mac only) or MP3 (all the world's computers). Then select the song or sound file in the iTunes library list and click on "Advanced"> "Convert selection to MP3". Now you have the file in two versions: a big .wav and a smaller MP3 (or AAC).

Hello VirgoSwetheart,

Go to Version Tracker and do a search:

http://www.versiontracker.com/macosx/

There is a whole audio section of the site for free downloads.
