Unfortunately, yes. There is no way the Iraqis can pull themselves back together after we've bombed their country into rubble without long-term help from us.

Only until the folks accepting US Dollar demand a metal
backed currancy and Fort Knox Federal Reserve cannot
cover Greenbacks in circulation. Look what happened to
the Soviet unit of exchange. First it was devalued and then
U.S.S.R. military discovered their former credit balance had vanished. For another explanation read history of source.
Another end of 'protracted' arrives shortly after National Recession closes most banks, consumer goods lose customer spending, and home front spending takes front seat ahead of oversea adventures.
The third likely end comes when Western backed Autocrats are overthrown by Islamic radicals on Iran Model; 'protracted' requires cooperation of some regional authority figures who might get the heck out of ...?... on short notice.
We could also wait until George W. tells us we have won
(again). I admit to being fooled by him for that. Once.

Yes, we are still in Germany, Japan, and Korea. How many years ago was that. We will have a presence in Iraq for quite some time.

WW2 lasted under 4 years, and we still have troops in Germany and Japan 62 years later.
The Korean Conflict lasted 3 years and we still have troops there 54 years later.
The Iraq War lasted 1/6th of a year and we still have troops there 4 years later. Based on other wars, I expect we'll be there for decades to some degree or other.

If the Iraqis don't start getting along, yes there will be several thousand U.S. troops there for several more years. Most of them will be pull out of there in 2009.

"Will be"????
It's already gone on longer than the Civil War, the War of 1812, the Spanish American War, WWI, WWII and the Korean War.

Meaning "drawn out" -- or more appropriately "extended beyond any rational measure" -- yep, very likely.
