YES in the U.S. they prescribe for themselves and their families all the time. But, if it is a controlled substance it is very much frowned upon and can result in their DEA number being revoked.
But I see many doctors writing themselves/child only simple meds, such as antibiotics.

I wonder why you think you have a problem. Does not going out talking to people really distract from the quality of your life????? Are you in touch with anyone at all??? If so, I'd say the problem is NOT that you cant relate to people....the problem is with the expectation that one must have tons of friends and be a social butterfly. This is NOT realistic for many people and they have the same human value as those who flit around. An alternative is to search your own soul and determine what gift it is you have. What talents, attitudes, strengths has God bestowed on you?? Focus on these and decide how you could use them to HELP OTHERS. This it a great exercise which helps each of us feel "useful" in this world. Good luck. Be patient with yourself and dont expect immediate results. Give this exercise at least a week to see results. And for heavens sake, the drugs dont work because they are unnecessary.

They are doctors so why can't they prescribe for themselves? Many doctors in fact do prescription for themselves. But are they really allowed or not?
Generally, self prescription by doctors is discouraged. It is part of the teaching in every medical school. It may be convenient for doctors to self-prescribe, but self-prescribing can be dangerous for various reasons: it lacks the objectivity and professional distance that usually exist between a physician and a patient, and can lead to a delay in diagnosis and in decision to treat.
The legality of self prescription by the doctors depends on legislation of certain places. Some have stipulated rules prohibiting it but some have no certain rules despite the discouragement of doing such.
In UK...The General Medical Council has a certain rule that prohibits doctors to prescribe for themselves. They are adviced to get a prescription from a professional colleague if they are ill. The GMC warned that doctors violating the rule can be removed from the register.

In conclusion, the doctor may but may not be allowed to prescribe for themselves. That would depend the place and on the doctor's personal view. They can prescribe for themselves, that's an easy task they can do but some jurisdiction had set rules not allowing them to do so.

Sure. There are times when it is stupid to do so, and self-prescribing controlled drugs like narcotics is a good way to get a knock on the door from a regulatory agency, but for a lot of little stuff, there's no problem.

Why not? If they know what's wrong with them, and they're well educated in the medical field, I guess they could prescribe medicine to themselves...

No. That is considered a breach of medical ethics and is illegal in most places. They also can't prescribe for their families (though many do).

definitely not, and it's a good thing. if they could, they could diagnose themselves with anything they felt like, giving them unlimited access to any number of drugs. they'd be spending a lot less time in the office and a bunch more time on the street corner peddling their wares...

If they did, it might not have the same pshcyological effect as someone else prescrbing it. Pluse, it's "their," not "there."
