Try the hartz brand. They are pretty cheap and they work pretty well. You can get them from places like Wal-Mart

My vet recommended Revolution -it's good for fleas as well as other pests and parasites. I thought it was kind of pricey at $13 a month so I did an Internet search and found an Australian pet pharmacy (deadfleaz) that sells it for $9 a dose (that's including the shipping). It's great stuff, works well and is not as harmful for the cat as some of the stuff they sell at the grocery/discount stores. It's really easy to administer - just a little squirt on the back of the neck once a month.

First of all, a lot of times less expensive products can be dangerous...Hartz should be avoided.
It can cause liver damage.
Addam's Flea & Tick is good.
So is Biospot. They have tube or spray.
Make sure whatever you use is made far cats. Never use anything made for dogs or other animals on a cat.
If you seriously want to avoid fleas, lay down the cash for Advantage, because you won't have to worry about fleas hatching in bedding, carpet, etc.
You get what you pay for.
The Advantage has to be applied as directed...or else it won't do its job.

It is important to spray your yard to help keep her flea free.
That means every month or two. Flea eggs hatch every 7 to 10 days and without spraying you will have a lot more fleas.
Then brush and comb her thoroughly outside so any fleas will stay out there. If you put the hair and the fleas you comb out in a jar of soapy water they will die.
Economizing is not good as it could be much more expensive to get rid of fleas out of your house.

There are a number of aromatic herbs that fleas don't like, such as tansy and fennel. You might try planting some of those so the fleas won't come in your yard. If you do that, you'll want to plant in such a way that you can cover the seeded area with some kind of screen or netting so your kitty won't use it as a sand box.
Good luck!

you can feed your cat brewers yeast and that will help to repel fleas naturally...also feeding your cat a high quality diet (not that iams or science diet crap either) will also help to keep the flea population down. I recomend getting Dr. Pitcairs Natural Care book and learning how to properly feed your animal....it will also give you herbal flea repellant recipes and ideas.... also there are things you can put in your yard that will help with fleas like nematoads depending on where you live...but cats roam outside of the yard so that may not help

I don't know, but I want to tell you by the time you are through experimenting to find something effective you could have a major infestation in your house that would be a second problem. You'll know when your ankles start to itch. Frontline is expensive but works, maybe you need to shop around.
