I want to keep my dog out of the kitchen and my cats out of my son's room and am wondering if a sonic barrier will do the trick.

try teaching them. Teach the dog to sit and stay. use some treats. After that is accomplished. place the dog just outside the kitchen door and if he starts into the restricted area, say sit and reward him. Reward him only if he remains in his designed area. Sometime a sharp NO will stop his progress and then do the sit stay and reward. It will take a little patients on your part, but he will learn that he is not allowed in the kitchen but only to the door. You will be surprised how fast he will get the message. If you will use a hand signal just for the sit/stay. Soon he will respond to your hand signal without a word from you. Takes some patience...no punishment...only rewards and kind voice. And he will be thrilled that you are learning to communicate with him. Pats and Praise.

The same will work with the cat, but since they are a lot more independent A clap or abrupt noise when she starts into the room will make her know she is not welcome. Cats can be trained, when they decide to cooperate. But consistency is important.

lots of luck.

Sonic barriers are a waste because all animals don't react to the pitch it creates. I taught my dogs not to come into the kitchen using aversion techniques. They HATE the sound of pills (tylenol) being shaken in a bottle. Whenever they do something wrong they hear the shake and immediately stop. Now they've learned to avoid the sound. The cat, you just squirt them with a squirt bottle when they go into your son's room. They will soon learn to not go in there.

Sorry, but I hate to disappoint. We tried them and if the battery dies and the device does not go off consistently, you are out of luck. Try a baby gate. More effective and always "on." They sell them with a release pedal for about $35 on Amazon.com

like an invisible fence? my dog has one around the yard so he doesnt wander off. you just put a collar on him/her and they hear a high pitched sound that annoys them and they walk away; if the dont walk away they get a small electric shock of energy that makes them never whantto go near that room/space again
