Buy a good metal comb (licender, licemeister, terminator), a thick conditioner (pantene). Smother hair with conditioner and comb thru the hair taking thin sections at a time. A good comb out takes 2 hours. One needs at least 2-4 thorough comb outs to eliminate all lice and nits. This is the most effective and safe treatment.

Well, in Asia, they have this comb with really tight teeth. You warm it over a flame and run it through your hair. The lice and eggs are swept with it. Do this with your head over a sink or newspaper so you can wash them or throw them away. Make sure to disinfect your combs, pins and whatever hair accessories you use before using them again.
I saw at Safeway a similar product but am not sure how effective it is.
And here's the one from amazon.

if you mean head lice, you can smother them with oil. Get some baby oil and drench your head in it, cover with a plastic shower cap, and sleep in it, leave it on at least 12 hours. you're going to have to shampoo several times to remove the oil, but it works.
if it's body lice, I don't know for sure.

Lice hide in hair. Shave off your hair, then take a hot shower. Not necessarily pleasant, but effective.

I work in a nursing home, and if somebody comes into our facility with lice, we drench their hair in olive oil.
