Which round is better for self defense? Which has more stopping power?

Hollowpoint bullets have a cavity of varying size in the nose of the bullets. In general Jacketed Hollowpoints will not reliably expand at velocities under 1000 feet per second.

Hydro-Shok bullets have a large hollow cavity with a post of harder lead in the center. The purpose of the post is to redirect body fluids against the side of the cavity, ensuring expansion at lower velocity.

Better expansion means better stopping power because it makes a larger wound channel, and if the bullet exits the target, it makes a larger exit wound.

For cartridges such as the .357 Magnum, I don't think Hydro-Shok bullets are worth the added expense. 125 gr. JHP's will generally expand at .357 Magnum velocities. For lower velocity cartridges such as the .38 S&W SPL and .45 ACP, I think Hydro-Shok's are a great idea.

In fact, Federal 230 gr. Hydro-Shok's are one of my two ammo choices for use in my Colt Stainless Officers' ACP pistol.

Hydroshocks rounds are just another way to get expansion out of a hollowpoint design. The best hollowpoints are bonded (Speer God Dot) to ensure that you don't have bullet-jacket seperation.

Hydra Shok ammo is a type of hollow point ammo produced by Federal as one of their premium loads. It has a post in the center of the hollow point that causes fluids and tissue to slam violently against the inside of the bullet making it expand violently. It is very effective and has great stopping power compared to a conventional (or even a conventional hollow point) bullets.

'hollowpoint' is a generic term while 'hydrashok' is a brand name. Hydroshoks are hollowpoints.

Federal Hydrashok has been my self defense choice for 15 years. I recommend it without reservation.

Hydra-Shock is just a JHP with a post in the center for more penetration.

a hoolow point is goinh to expand larger than the cailber you shoot. a hydroshock will expand more than that. slightly softer bullet, a design to expand up to 2 times the cailber. it is used for stpooing power in a self-defense situation
