When a person is suing someone for breach of contract, they can sue for damages, or for specific performance. If you're seeking damages, you're seeking money to compensate you for the damages you incurred through the breach of the contract. If you're seeking specific enforcement, it means that you want the court to force the other person to follow through with their part of the contract. Courts will not usually order specific performance if monetary damages would be suitable compensation for the breach.

A contract is an agreement that each party will do certain things.

Specific performance means requiring the party to do what they agreed to do in the contract -- to perform according to what the specific terms of the contract required.

It is generally requested as a type of remedy in a civil suit for breach of contract, but can occur during proceedings by asking the court to order some specific action that is required by the contract.
