"He was born with a gift of laughter and a sense that the world was mad"

The opening sentence of the novel "Scaramouche" by Rafael Sabatini. Scaramouche is one of the pantomime chracters along with Harlequin, Pierrot, Madame Frying-pan etc. The book was made into a good film with Stewart Granger about 50 years ago and still has one of the best sword fights ever made.
