when i got to about 10 bed times were scrapped. My dad had a theory that worked quite well. He would tell me what time he thought i should go to bed. Sometimes i did and sometimes i didnt. Pretty soon i learned that if i didn't, i would be really tired, and not have a great day the next day. So fairly quickly i learned to go to bed at the right time for me.
I don't see why people are so strict with things like bed time. At a younger age yes, at an older age i think it's pointless.

My partner and i often disagree with our boys about bedtimes. They are 8 and 11 and share a room, at bedtime they usually read or watch a dvd but my partner thinks the eldest should stay up longer but i say if they are watching a dvd they should go at the same time..
They are showered and bedded by 9pm school nights in the summer, but in the winter nights usually earlier.
The weekends are flexible, depending on plans and of course behaviour.

i don't have kids but on school nights my mom puts us to bed at these times
~the kids that are 4,5,7, and 9 usually go to bed at 7-8:30
~my brother thats 12 goes to bed at around 9
~im almost 16 so they don't give me a bed time but im usually in bed by 8 :30 for school. i always get up on time and never give them any trouble so they don't bother with a bed time.

I think 8pm is late enough for kids upto 9yrs (and I mean going to sleep and not watching tv).
9 - 11yrs I think 9pm
12 - 14yrs - 10pm
My son would go early but liked someone to stay with him until he was asleep. It took a lot of work for him to fall asleep alone (after a story) but he quickly settled into a new routine.
As a nursery/infant teacher I can pinpoint which children have had late nights. it REALLY affects kids performance / attitude at school.

Our daughter is four, and our son is six. During the school year they are both in bed by 8 pm. Our daughter wakes herself early (6 am) while our son argues when awakened at 7, so really it depends on the child.
