Check out the Toyota or Honda hybrids, both have the safety features, both come in 4 doors, both have A/C, and both definitely good good gas mileage...:)

What cost money is comprehensive insurance, so pay cash and get a car that's really cheap to insure, (Saturn, Focus zx3 etc) if you cash for it you can then buy liability ONLY for it.
Then, shop around as prices wildly differ, you can't assume the first insurer is the best.
This is where I go to: http://carinsurance.comparisondotcom.com/quotes.htm
and also try this: http://carinsurance.comparisondotcom.com/quotes1.htm for another set of quotes. It's free to do and there's no obligation to buy anything so time spent checking every price out is worth your time in gold.
hope I helped!
Best of luck.

I agree with the Pontiac girl, I have a few pontiacs and I sell them, a G-6 might work good, or a Vibe if you want the mini-SUV utility that gets awesome mileage!! Vibe Gets like 34 MPG on the highway with an automatic!!!

Toyota Yaris. A cute car. Your wife might like it. Good Safety Rating. And 34 City, 39 HWY.
Here's the site for the car. Comes in Sedan or Hatchback:

In California next year(2008) they will be selling a car for about $14,000 to $18,000. It will be smaller than a mini-Cooper, yet get up to 100 miles to the gallon. Check out popsci.com(Popular Science magazine website).

I'M 5'2 AND I DRIVE A PONTIAC GRAND PRIX. IT HAS LOTS OF COOL FEATURES. BUT IF YOU WANT SOMETHING RELATIVELY CHEAP, WHY NOT TRY A KIA OR A FORD FOCUS. THEY ALSO HAVE GOOD MILEAGE AND ALL THE BASICS.
