Why do people think you are posh if you go to a private school?

I go to a private school and a lot of my outside of school friends think I am really posh for going there.
Why do so many people think that private schools are for posh folk?

people also remark on the fact that it is all girls :(

Because they are ignorant and assume that because your family pays for your pre-college education that you are rich or something. If it really bothers you, you can do one of two things. 1) just ignore the comments because you know you are there to get an education. 2) explain that your family thought that your school would provide better opportunities for you and you're gonna milk it for all it's worth if it's going to make you more successful later on.

Because it usually costs something extra to go there.
Most places, you still have to pay public school taxes.
Do you know where 'POSH' originated?
When rich people travelled to the tropics,
they wrote POSH on their luggage.
It stood for "Port Out, Starboard Home"
That meant they wanted a cabin on the cool side.

Because your parents pay for you to attend. Essentially public school is free.
Another example to see it from other peoples perspective is this:
You are a member of a country club so you can go hang out there.
or
you can go hang out at the mall or the park.

Because your school would probably be the largest single annual expenditure of many of your friends families if they sent their kids there.

It isn't cheap, but it is worth it.
