If the cupboards are in sturdy shape, why not paint them and just do new counter tops? Saves a lot and if you hate them after a while, you can install new ones. That would give you enough time to get someone in to give you an estimate. Good luck.

There are several ways to look at this first look at the condition the cabinets or counter top are because you might be able to do this in stages. If you replace the cabinets and keep the same configuration you can reuse the counter tops until a later date when you can upgrade the counter top. Sometimes reconfiguring the kitchen different you get a better kitchen layout this usually results in more money because you now need new cabinets and counter tops. The best thing for you is to get with your friends and find out who knows who in this area that can help you with these questions and try to get some sweat equity work done from your friends and yourself. By the way a starting point for a small kitchen remodel could possibly start at 3 thousand and go up to 20 thousand that would not always include new appliances. There is a lot to consider and I encourage you to due the home work here are areas that will be affected for you to ask questions. Electrical work includes (Lighting changes, Switches, Range) Plumbing work includes (Sink, Water for refrigerator) Flooring work. I hope you have a great time remodeling its your kitchen but get good design help.

You are correct there is a vast range of products. I ususally check prices on counters with a couple of merchants in my area being sure I am compairing apples to apples. I prefer counters that are in neutral tones so I can easily change the colors of the room in the future. I also go for a surface that is a dull but smooth finish. The smooth finish means that dirt doesn't collect and the flat or dull finish helps hide tiny nicks and scrathes that will occur over time. I like a fine pattern that helps hide small stains and wear.

As for cabinets be sure you really need to replace the entire thing. If the cabinets are in good condition sometimes you can get the effect you want by changing the hardware alone or consider just replacing the doors of the cabinets for a new look.

Paint of course is always an option but it is harder to keep clean and will have to be changed every time you change the color in your room.

Each section of the country will have different prices. Kitchens cost the most to replace. Get three estimates and choose the one you like best. Places such as Home Depot can give you a list of companies that do this type of work.

If you ever decide to sell your house, the beauty of a kitchen and the bathrooms will be the biggest selling point. If you have the money, by all means replace your kitchen.

Price range is widely variable.... depends on whether you are replacing sink and fixtures and even the appliances when you remodel the countertops and cabinets.

If the cabinet structure is good you may want to think about simply replacing the doors and drawer fronts and painting all to match to save money.

Another good place to save money on cabinets and countertops and fixtures is to contact local auctioneers and find out when their next building supply auction is scheduled and what may be available.

Also in my community there is a charity that sells donated building supplies. Many builders take perfectly fine counters and cabinets out when hired to update a kitchen. They take care in removing them and donate them to the building supply charity and you can really find some great deals there. You may have one in your area, worth checking out.

Unless the cabinets must go immediatly, why not use Cabinet Coat, a low lustre self priming paint that will give you amazing results & give you time to plan your future kitchen. At about $48.00 / gallon you'd be amazed the look this will give & save you lots of $$.

If the cabinets are good wood, just use paint remover and re-paint them. That is if they are painted, they may be varnished, then you can strip it and re-stain it. This way you can save money on the cabinets and use the extra money to put in a nice granite, or corian countertop

Your kitchen is your best show for any chance of resale so I wouldn't skimp on something so important. Work with kitchen experts at Home Depot or Loews to start and see where you can get the most bang for your buck and also learn what would give you the best return for your dollars spent. There are lots of options.

If you do the work yourself you should be able to do-it all for closer to the thousand mark easily.
Provided this is a small kitchen.
