He gags himself with his hands to the point where if I didn't stop him he would vomit. I have teethers for him and tons of toys but he still gags himself and I don't know how to make him stop, any suggestions? Is this common at this age?

My son did the exact same thing around this age. I was so worried I asked the pediatrician, who told me it was completely normal. It's a mechanism to get attention (and it certainly worked - it got a reaction from me every time). The doctore told me to ignore him. It was tough to do, but I didn't pay it any attention, and my son stopped.

My son went through a major phase of biting himself REAL hard on the arm whenever he was upset and frustrated - he'd leave teethmarks and sometimes a bruise. If you son is doing it from frustraion or boredom, try to find him alternatives at the peak moment when its possible he may bite and hurt himself. It really upset us when our son would do this and hurt himself a lot. I dont know how normal it is, but he did stop doing it after enough times of us telling him not to and pulling his arm away.

My son did the same thing around that age to. Drove me nuts!! I know what you mean. I would just grab his hands. It is a stage. When I did see him doing it I tell him no no we don't do that. That is all you can really do. He stopped after a while cus I told him no often. But he would laugh after he would do it sometimes. Maybe cus he knew how to get HIS body to react to something he was doing. I told my doctor and my mom and they said the same thing. "He is a baby and he does it to do it and its not life threaten so don't worry about." "He will stop." And he did.

i think my daughter was about that age when she realized she could do this and she thought it was the funniest thing ever especially if she got a reaction from me about it she actually did vomit a few times the more fuss i made over it the more she did it so i finally started ignoring it and she eventually moved on to other things

He's probably teething way in the back and most teethers don't reach that far back. Try a little orajel.

take his hands out of his mouth when you see him gagging himself and give him something that will get his attention. for example a musical toy or anything with buttons he can push.

Just try to redirect him to a toy or an activity or sing a song, he will eventually stop, my son used to grimd his teeth and it was just a fase, babies are all about sensory things.

*lol* I think they all do it to some degree at some point. Ignoring it works best, generally they won't hurt themselves. If you give them attention for it it can just reinforce the behaviour.

my daughter did this for a while. she's 13 mos now and doesn't do it as often as she used to. I'm not sure if its teething, but she seems to just be growing out of it.

Sounds odd. I dont know what you mean exactly. Distract him when he does it and maybe he will grow out of it. Consult your doctor or health visitor.
