Have you tried Chap Stick or some other lip balm? Often times, the orthodontist has to be aggressive in pulling the lips back far enough so he or she can get the brackets and corresponding wires on the far back teeth. It's a temporary discomfort but your new smile in the end will make all the pain and discomfort worthwhile.

Hi! I've been in dentistry for over 25 years and this is common. Try this, use blistex on the corners and then Vaseline on your lips. Make sure you carry the Vaseline container and use it 4-5 times a day. This will stop the irritation, help it to heal and stop the redness. At night before bed, rinse with very salty warm water. This will help heal. You can also apply camphor-phenque to the corners of your mouth but DO NOT use ambesol. That will burn and make things worse. Once the redness stops, keep up with the Vaseline and you will be fine. This will keep your lips moist and stop any cracking. If you have any other questions, please ask. Marie
