Prefer Fox. Good value for money. However, The main leaning with forks at the moment tends to be towards more travel. You can replace your fork easily, but would not go for extra travel, as this would shag your geometry.

Other goodies, like magnesium lowers, and would be handle bar lock out options give you more gadgets. There tends to be better rebound adjustment etc. on modern shocks.

Your question is a bit of - how long is a piece of string. Althoug you have named your bike, I would need to know the sort of use you want to put your bike to before recommending a shock.

However, for about 250 - 400 you should get a reasonable fork.

The killer V has the typical HEADSHOC ---though you had a Manitou ---which ain't BAD though I suggest you look at these websites for your front suspension upgrade----www.pricepoint.com,www.blueskycycling.com or www.wheelworld.com Hope I am of assistance!
