Jesus said that was the case, however, man does have free will and some of the things complained about by Luther were a legitimate concern and down right wrong.
Communications was not as fast as it is today.
By the time a council was convened to rectify the things that should not have been happening, Luther had gone off on his own tangent and created his own rendition of Christianity.
The Holy Spirit will always be with the Church, I truly believe if it had not been the Church would have died out completely during those years and the splinter groups, would have been the only ones left.

"The Holy Spirit is a gentleman", i.e. He doesn't force His truth on christians. Christians receive Him when they become believers in Christ. He is the spring of living water referred to in John 4:13 and John 7:38-39.

But christians experience a conflict between the 'flesh', i.e. remnant human nature trying to do things according to natural (fallen) human reasoning, and the 'spirit'. People often rely on their own minds, which contain a lot of junk picked up before they become christians, and junk picked up living in this sinful, God-rejecting world. So leaders can be in the 'flesh' and not 'in the spirit'. So faulty decisions are quite possible. However we do have the Spirit of God, something not true of moslems, who have rejected the Son of God, and so can't receive the Spirit.

So worldly thinking was affecting Popes. A few of them were very worldly and probably not christians at all - being a christians isn't a matter of saying 'I believe in God and his messiah Jesus' - its believing and then God responding by fulfilling His promises in His word.

But Catholics have corrected most of those errors. The Holy Spirit has been involved in that correction !

The Holy Spirit guides any individual who believes in God. Organizations, whether they be churches or others, are formed by, led by, filled by, used and abused by people. Anyone who claims to be guided by the Holy spirit is full of it.

that is one of the biggest lies ever. Paul DID NOT start the catholic church and historical evidence says the catholic church started about 400 years or more after the death of Christ
