I prefer Asics, probably cause those are the only running shoes I've ever had, but I still love them. They have shoes for different pronators, shoes for certain distances, and for different running environment (trail, track, xc). Just try not to get anything with shocks, they tend to be harder on your feet.

For begginers, the best thing to do is go to a specialty running store or Dick's or Sports Authority and try on a bunch of different shoes then jog around the store. Just go with the ones that feel the best to you. Brookes, Asics, and Mizunoes tend to be the better shoes because those companys spend more time creating a product. I hope this helped you! Also, many shoes by the listed brands, are around 80$ which is a good price for running shoes! =)

I just started running and I started w/ asics. The more running I did the worse my feet felt. I got a blister on my foot. It all depends on the type of foot you have but your best option is to go to a shoe store and ask for help. Also the amount of mileage you put in is going to determine the shoe you get. If you're doing 4-8 miles a day I would suggest saucony or brooks. They feel great. Try a lot on and test them..see how they feel when you run. Once you find a good pair, stick w/ them.
Any good quality shoe is expenisive. There are no cheap shoes..sorry.

Asics are a very affordable good quality shoe for beginning runners. They provide excellent cushioning and pair can be bought for anywhere from $30-$40.

go to a local shoe store that specializes in running if available
the smaller the better
they'll give you a bunch of technical jargon about what you'd be looking for in a shoe (size, arch support, width, brand even)
then you go to the big retailers to buy a shoe that fits that discription
personally, i go for asics, because i have wide feet and need more less support
also, keep in mind that no matter what you get, you will get blisters
but if you get a huge amount then consider a different shoe
most of all, have fun running

If you're a newbie, then there isn't much decision to make except to buy quality, get the right size, and replace them at the right time. New Balance, Saucony, Asics, and others all produce a good shoe. Buy the one that feels good.

i dont know about women's shoes but i run frequently, so i think that most puma shoes are great for running and about the same price you would pay at dick's for a pair a nike's or oasic's, their shoes are lightweight and very comfortable, the only problem is that there are not many puma stores around so you would have to order them online at puma.com
