I am very interested in buying a Catholic Bible but I am unsure which one to buy?

I want your personal opinion on which translation is the best & why. Maybe this will help me to choose a translation, there are so many to choose from that it makes my head hurt ROFL.

I also heard that there will be a new edition of the New American Bible that has a revised old testament, some one recommend that I wait on buying a Catholic Bible till the new edition is published. what do you think?

Thank you for your time & God Bless
(please answer respectfully thank you *HUGS*)

There is no which bible to recommend. some christan argue on which translation or bible to use. But Bible is direct word from God. It is a love letter for us. Believe in Jesus Christ! dont follow the culture of this world or tradition of Catholic church. It is about you and your relationship to Jesus Christ. he loves you so much. Amen. He wants to start a relationship with you. He is your friend, if you belive in him.

The NAB, as well as the Catholic edition of the RSV, are both respected translations. I have both, and the differences are slight. They are quite a bit easier to read than the Douay-Rheims, in the same way that some later translations are less cumbersome in language than the KJV (interestingly, the Douay-Rheims was printed earlier than the King James ...).

In either case, you're looking for a translation that includes the seven Deuterocanonical books in the Old Testament which were omitted from the King James and later Protestant translations. The New Testament is the same across all editions.

The NAB is a pretty modern translation. It is better than the older ones. If you want something that sounds more like older Protestant Bibles get the Douay-Rheims Version. If is inferior as literature to the KJB and is no longer used for Catholic prayer, worship or study, but it used to be. All modern Catholic Bibles have Protestants (and an occasional Jew) on their translation committees. I would recommend the NRSV Catholic edition, but it is the same as modern Protestant translations. I think you are looking for the Douay-Rheims Version because even the RSV is too modern a translation. As you know, the Catholic Church is international. I don't know if there has been a recent translation into Latin. The last one I recall is the Vulgate (5th century). The last two references are leads on that.

The following Bible translations are approved by the Catholic Chruch for personal use:
+ Douai-Rheims
+ Confraternity Edition
+ Revised Standard Version (RSV) - Catholic Edition
+ New American Bible (NAB )
+ Jerusalem Bible
+ New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)- Catholic Edition
+ New Jerusalem Bible
+ Today's English Version - Catholic Edition

I recommend the New American Bible (NAB) which is the version used during Mass and other liturgies in the U.S. and many other English speaking countries.

Here is a NAB website: http://www.nccbuscc.org/nab/bible/

With love in Christ.

The major difference in the Protestant and the Catholic Big Bible is the Duteronicals.
Look up the American bible society and they have all translations available. Biblegateway.com can get you to different versions and you can read the books on line. God Bless!

I am not a Roman Catholic, but I can tell you that the New American Bible is high quality translation, as long as you read the text and not the comments in the margin or at the bottom of the page.

You can read the New American Bible for free at one of the links listed below:

Contrary to all previous answers, I *highly* recommend the New Jerusalem Bible, Regular Edition over any of the others mentioned. See my review at (remove spaces - YA link bug) www. jimpettis .com/bibles/njb.htm .

The only bible I've read that really comes close is the Oxford Annotated New Revised Standard Version - more because of the study notes than the translation.

Please feel free to explore my (unfinished) bible reviews site - it will help you to compare many bible versions, particularly the charts and the footnotes to the big chart.

I hope this helps.

From what others have said you have your choice of Holy Bibles to choose from. I myself use the New American Bible. Good luck in your search.
