Baking soda only works in the refrigerator for food odors. I serves no purpose as a dehumidifier for anything including guns. You need to purchase Desiccant that is made specifically for keeping moisture away from firearms. If you store your guns in a closet or gun safe, this is the most effective way to prevent gun damage from moisture. There are a number of places you can purchase it on line. The place I buy it from for personal use and at my Gun Shop is brownells.com. It comes in different size containers and looks almost identical to baking soda, but it is a completely different material. It called Silica Gel. The great part about buying it this way is the containers have a small indicator on the box that turns pink when the material has absorbed all the moisture it can. You simply take the container of gel and put it in your kitchen oven at low temperature for about 45 minutes. Take it out and the indicator spot will now be blue and it's good as new to use all over again like its new. It's not expensive and can be used over and over again. I have some gun safe packages that I have had for 10 years and they still work over and over again!

Do not even think about it!!!!! use only gun oil/grease particularly formulated to stop rust. R.I.G. is the one I use . I bought a five lb. can about 30 years a go and still have better than half. Contact a large gun store Brownells on the Internet is tops. ( not walmart etc. )and see what they have. Do not use anything on the ammo. It will kill it.
for a dehumidifier use silica gel on proper containers. not loose on the gun container. it may have a color agent that changes color when it it need to be changed. you dry it out in the oven.
Baking soda is a good odor absorber not a water absorber.
remember every time you touch a gun you wipe off the gun !!!! the salt in your sweat will take blue off a gun over night. and rust it as part of the bargin.

It will give you peace of mind and that is about it.

Better options are:

1. Get a dehumidifier.
2. Use a chemical package designed to absorb water.
3. Use a "hot rod" in a safe to drive out the humidity.
4. Keep the guns well oiled with a heavy gun oil.
5. Move to Arizona, Nevada or New Mexico.

Why not just spend $200 on a dehumidifier? Or keep a light coating of gun oil on your firearms?

My dehumidifier arrived on the UPS truck today. The house had 61% relative humiditiy and has already dropped to 51%. In about 5 hours time.

No- we need more info- are the guns in a cabinet , what?

leave the baking soda in the kitchen.
--thanks [someone] for the downcheck...I wonder why?

if the guns are in a case or closet...a small-wattage light bulb on will provide enough heat to eliminate moisture

unless you guns and ammo have a foul odor, baking soda will be of little benefit.
