It could be.

I believe that religion is a healthy thing. The problem is that people get carried away with trying to prove their beliefs to be the right beliefs while everyone else's beliefs are wrong.

Everyone can have a different religion without forcing it others. The church is too concerned with convincing people to follow them for fear of punishment in the after life. But religion was originally created to enrich our lives while on earth. We became to concerned with what happens after we die that we lose sight of religion while we are alive.

In the same sense if someone chooses not to believe in a religion that is their prerogative.

Religion (or lack thereof) should be something that helps you personally, not scares you and tries to scare others.

You're not telling us anything new. I know I'm a glutton and I attend over-eaters meetings, etc. Everyone is sinful and gluttony is equal to any other addiction one can name. God often chooses the least from among His people to do His word. This way we cannot claim our success was because of our own streghtn. Should I stop going to the homeless shelter until I get my eating under control? Should I stop helping Habitat for Humanity? No, I'll continue to do what is good and continue to face down my own demons with God's help. God doesn't demand us to be perfect. He demands that we rely on Him and trust Him.

It's quite the opposite actually. People who have a belief have hope for their lives. They tend to enjoy life more and are much less suicidal. Religious people are also moral because they know what God wants them to do.
So in many ways religion and belief is constructive.

I believe it is. There are many destructive sides to religion. Religious wars and conflicts, abuse, inhumanity in denying people the right to their reproductive choices, willfully forcing children into the religion without letting them make their own choices, and wanting to deny children a full and rich education with a strong scientific background, to the point of lying and making up things to try to make their religious beliefs seem true.

You, yourself, are an AWARE-WILL power. An AWARE-WILL power has the gift of self aware life and the means (will) to direct that life. You discover soon after becoming self aware that there are other AWARE-WILL powers. If religion is simply the belief system that an AWARE-WILL uses to guide his/her life then all AWARE-WILLS have religion if they have any self designed (willed) system to their lives.. If belief in a God is an acceptance by any AWARE-WILL that there is another AWARE-WILL or -WILLS that can influence, even dominate your own AWARE-WILL and has the power to do so then anyone other than a solipsist can believe in God and does.

Believing as I do that solipsism is an impossibility then even an atheist believes there are other AWARE-WILLS than his/her own. Unless they have adopted the belief system of dominate or be dominated with a goal of preserving their own self at all costs then other AWARE-WILLS may be accepted as influencing their own AWARE-WILL power. They therefore have a God. Dominate or be dominated is a stupid way to design one's life (It is a stupid religion) as it leads to solipsism.

The only way to avoid there being an eternal, superior, dominant AWARE-WILL (an eternal God) is to not adopt the dominate or be dominated life style as a religion. In other words strive to cooperate with other AWARE-WILLS as a religion.

The only destructive addiction is a dominate or be dominated life style or religion.

I don't think so. Having a belief in something isn't destructive. It is not a religion or following one that is bad. It is when we are extreme with our beliefs that we become destructive to ourselves and people around us. It is not christians that are racist. It is the christians that follow the decrees of the KKK that are racist and destructive to everyone that isn't Anglo-Saxon. It is not the Muslims that are bombing people. It's the ones that claim the religion of Islam that happen to be radicals that are the ones bombing people.

Well, I don't consider myself to be religious. There are so many versions of such a simple truth. That is why there is so much confusion and conflict.

I very simply believe in God. I believe the Bible is his word to us, on history, life, love, hate, compassion, humility, etc. etc.
But most importantly it tells the truth of the sacrifice made by his son, for all of us, on the Cross. Though we are all sinners, we can be forgiven, by that sacrifice.

For me, that's the simple pure truth. Nothing addictive, nor destructive about it. It's simply called faith.

No! It's a way of coping with reality in a scary universe.
Knowing that you are loved by your Creator is re-assuring.
Treating others with the same respect due to yourself,
is a much better way of life than cynical self-interest.
Just look at some of the attitudes displayed here by atheists.

Look at the attitudes displayed by you alone! Nobody's an atheist?! Believing in a Creator IS a type of CYNICAL SELF INTEREST?!

like all things, excessiveness is always destructive. too much water can kill you. to much sun can kill you. too much religion can kill you. because, the idea that only one religion is the proper religion, it should be pushed onto others, will be an attack on anothers idea that their religion is correct. the way that we place moderation onto religion is my accepting other religions. if we dont practice relgion freedom, then we end up waring over religion which in turn takes us away from the key focuses of religion. so yes it can be.
