Yes it is. I do have a problem with moderate religion, not so much as I do with fanatics, but.... I'll explain.

In the context of human-caused atrocities, what is it that takes irresponsibility and irrationality, nurtures them, enables them, creates an environment in which they can flourish and strengthen so much so that these dangerous attributes are primed to pose a much more significant threat, to influence us to be much more capable of and likely to commit horrible crimes against humanity? Is it reason, rationality and logic to blame, or is it that thing (religious faith) which allows dogmatic certainty in their absence?

In this sense, yes, I would say that all believers have this fault in common. Faith, regardless of who adheres to it, is NOT conducive to peace among humanity. Faith in the hands of a moderate isn’t an immediate and direct harm and I admit that. They’re more like life-support for faith, making sure it survives from generation to generation until it’s instilled into the wrong person… the extremist.

I'm guessing that by Americans you mean people in the USA rather than of all the nations of the Americas.

Compared to Europe, which is in the main civilised and understands the separation of Religion from State, the USA is a lot further under the thumb of hard core religionists. The US has crazy laws setting some loving relationships above others through biased marriage laws, murderous hypocrites in the anti-choice lobby on abortion, etc.

On the second point it'd make no difference; the US quit being the home of the brave and the land of the free a long, long time ago.

"what would happen to America if the Hard Core religionists got as much power as the Taliban did in Afghanistan?"

Well, we'd probably invade other countries for no good reason, violate the rights of our citizens, etc.

Oh wait. Deja vu.

It's absolutely bad for society.

Several hundreds of years ago, many countries, especially the Holy Roman Empire, had this kind of power and completely abused it on its people.

That's why the people separated the church from the state.

If you're really interested, maybe you should look at some history books on the middle ages.

All religion is bad for society. The more "hard core," the worse. Where did you get the idea that we Americans were free?

You bet, it would be brave and the home of the free, because we all would be saved and know our God.
There would be peace and joy here on earth.
No more immorality, no more murderers, thieves, if they all turned to God. But that would only happen in heaven.

It would be better, more like it used to be, back when there were less violent crimes, less pornography, less drug use, etc.
In short, it had a way of guiding people into better more responsible lives, free from the problems an undisciplined life makes.
