I've downloaded an audiobook. It consists of 30 chapters, but the whole thing is in one file. I would like to cut it into separate files. How can I do it? Which program would manage to edit about 18 hours audio file?

Cool Edit Pro is the best I know of, but it's not free.

If you're lookin' for free, you can't beat Audacity. It's simple, has a simple user interface and all that. - The only difficulty is that (if you're gonna save as .mp3) you need to download the lame mp3 encoder also, since Audacity itself can't encode mp3s, so it uses that encoder to solve that problem.

http://audacity.sourceforge.net

For LAME mp3 encoder::
http://audacity.sourceforge.net/help/faq?s=install&item=lame-mp3
http://lame.buanzo.com.ar/

NOTE: The second website (buanzo) is down for some reason.. but, if you want, I could send you the lame mp3 encoder in an email or over an IM. It's s tiny file, so it wouldn't be any problem. My email's unh0ly_freak@yahoo.com - just mention "lame mp3 encoder" if you want it.

-Hope this helps.

VirtualDub by Avery Lee was standard freeware that came packaged along with the typical Kazaa installation back in the day. I recommend being sure to virus scan any installation files you download from the internet, and then run an antispyware scan after the installing the program. It's simple to use and you can also Google the instructions for using it. Basically you position the start point, press Home key, position to the first break point, press the End key, then process the stream to an audio segment. Once that finishes, press the Home key to begin where you left off with the previous segment, position the next break point, press the End key, process the stream. Repeat until complete. Very easy. Good luck!

I recommend Adobe Audition (formerly Cool Edit Pro)

There are lots of free audio editing programs, such as Audacity. (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/) You can find dozens of editors on the net.
