Currently, I am living in CA and driving a resistered car, but I am temporarily going back to Japan about 6 month to one- year; therefore, I want to cancel my car resistation and car insurance. I have already submitted a cancelation form to my insurance company and told from when. however, I am not sure which form I should submit to DMV, non-operation or affidavit of non-use. My resistation will expire on December. I am leaving here in one week. Please let me know... Thank you very much.

You have to fill out BOTH forms. Go to the CA DMV website and look up the circumstances surrounding the use of each one.

Per the CA DMV website:
Non-operational means that the vehicle will not be driven, towed, stored, or parked on public roads or highways for the entire registration year.

The affadavit states the car will not be operated or parked on CA roads requrining insurance.

Since you do not have your renewal notice yet, you can send a REG 102(Certificate of Non-Operation/Planned Non-Operational Certificate) along with the fee of $17.00 to the DMV, or go in person ask for the above form and pay at the counter. When you get back, and want to drive the car, full registration fees will become due, without the penalties of course since you have done the Non-op. Hope this helps.

Neither. Especially in CA where you have to keep plates on the car no matter what, even if it's non use. So you get back in 6 months to a year, and go to get insurance.

"Do you currently have coverage?"
"No."
And you go into the high risk category and it costs you more that what you saved.

Besides, even if you have it locked in the garage, what if the garage burns down? Or someone breaks in and damages your car? Still think no insurance is such a good idea?

Quick---sell the car or it will be impounded and sold at auction... Every car has to have current registration plates.. Considered abondoned... Since you have plates have to have insurance... Got one week what ya gona do... Are you utting the car in storage... If their is a loan on the car---still have to have iinsurance...
