Pollution.... And yes Meagan's Bay in St. Thomas is beautiful... I sat at a cafe and watched it for three hours... it's mesmerizing!!!

Believe it or not, the NY beaches are cleaner today than they were 20 years ago. There used to be so much garbage in the water, now you'll see only a lost ballon, or shopping bag. Some days, however, you are right it's murky brownish green dirty. That's an algae problem and less a pollution problem.

The beach water in NY is NOT always brown/green and or dirty. (sure it is sometimes) The cloudiness and low visibility are due in large part to sediment which is kicked up during storms and by waves, currents etc. The water at beaches off of Long Island (PARTICULARLY further out like places like MONTAUK) can be crystal clear to the point that you can still see your feet clearly in up to 3-4 feet of water, although places closer to the city are often that clear as well.

Because it supports life. Clean and clear are not synonyms when it comes to water quality. The biomass of the North Atlantic is far greater than the biomass of the Caribbean Sea. Wouldn't you feel better swimming in an ocean that will support a lot of life then one that won't ?
