Live bait will always be king, but however in most fresh water fishing tourney's you are required to use artificial bait which works in both fresh and salt water. But requires alot more work and patience. I would also like to add that if you are fishing for bass, top water lures look the best when the fish strikes. some top water bass lures also work for fishing specks at night under lights, just in case you run out of live bait, cast out of the light and let float into the light jerking the lure.

Everyone says that it depends on what your after, to some point, I have to agree. I fish a lot for catfish, and bait is always better for them. When I use minnows, I am usually going for crappie, and am really successful. However, I have always had better luck with bass using lures. I have noticed that the bigger fish are almost constantly caught on bait. I caught a 30 lb drum in the Coosa River in Ragland, Al using a minnow, and I got a 65 lb catfish in the same area using shad. However, the best bass was 9 lb and it was caught (mostly by accident) on a 1 ft stick with about 3 ft of line, a hook I found on the bank, and an old rubber worm, walking a trail between two lakes. So, to answer your question, with the most sincerity then I am going to say bait.

I hardly ever use live bait. I use lures 99% of the time. The other 1% is when the fish arent biting so i decide to go for gills on worms or crickets

Live bait is my favorite. I have nothing against lures but it will never replace live. Live works the best just about no where you go. Shrimp happens to be my favorite for sea fishing.

I feel that no artificial bait will ever replace live bait. I sometimes use artificial to locate the fish. I then switch over once I get a bite, to save bait.

In the mighty Atlantic off the coast of Long Island, bait will outfish lures any and everyday except for bluefish. I've caught cocktail bluefish non-stop on soft plastic finese on a jig head. Yet outside of fishing for bluefish, I like bait, bunker, calms, or mackerel.

I only use artificials for freshwater fishing, bass, walleye and crappie mostly. Don't get to do much saltwater fishing.
