I have two kids age 2 and 4, and my 4 year old keeps asking for a dog. I have always grew up with a family dog and so has my husband but he refuses to let us have a dog as he's allergic and will not take pills for it. I really want to talk him round - does anyone know where I can get a type of dog that wouldn't irritate him?

Thanks for all your great answers! I've got a lot to think about. Maybe ill wait til the kids are a little older - good point. I'm just being selfish as I really miss having a dog around - been without for 10 years - i'm withdrawing! lol

Children love dogs. And because of this they sometimes are just to ruff with the dog. There are NO garantees that a dog would not bite when he is pushed repeatidly by a young child. A dog requires alot! With two young children are you honestly ready for this. And I would not worry about a breed for your husbands allergies as much as a good breed who might be able to tollerate young children. I've heard that it is not the dog but it's dandur that causes the allergies in humans and this is as easy a specially made shampoo just for this.
Anyway I think it would be best to adopt a dog when your children are older and can help with the rsponsibility as long as with showing the dog respect. Young children are too too too touchy feely squeezy and that annoys the dog.

Poodles, Shih Tzus and Lhasa Aspos all dont cast and are better for peopl with allergies. If your husband would prefer something more manly Labradoodles (labrador poodle x) are supposed to still be 'hypoallergenic' - if thats how you'd class them!
I have asthma and eczema and i am allergic to cats but i have still had an alsation and 2 cats - your body builds a slight resistence to the allergens!

most people i know that have allergy to dogs are those to long haired dogs. i personally have a 16 month oldf baby and have a cocker spaniel which is brilliant with my baby.
find out exactley what type of dog he is allergic to and then go and get one that is the oppsoite, the last thing you want is for your kids to get attached to the doggy and then have to give it up.
also make him take his pills!!!!! lol.

You can get breeds that are crossed with poodles to produce non moulting dogs. ie, Cockapoo,(cocker spaniel X) Jackapoo(jack russel X), Yorkiepoo (Yorkshire terrier X) Labradoodle (Labrador X) ect. Just a thought in case your husband doesn't think a poodle is macho enough.
Your other option is to get rid of your husband and replace him with a dog. Ha Ha.

Get a bisson frise, don`t know if I`ve spelt it right. They don`t moult, are self exercising, except for doodies and are really friendly pets.Only small even when fully grown, only drawback is they need to be groomed, not poncy but tidy.

The kind of dogs that are going to be good with children are not the kind good for allergies. Maybe someone else can think of one, but not me.

most people who are allergic to dogs are allergic to the dogs hair so you could try one with little or no hair.
e.g a chinese crested hairless variaty.
i personally like dogs better with fur though.
hope this helps you and your problem.

Why don't you visit a website like www.dogstrust.co.uk. They may have a FAQ section on there which may answer your question.
Also by doing this you are helping rehouse a dog that has been abandoned etc.
