Chinese juice is 220V, 50Hz.

Check the rating on your laptop power supply. If it's compatible with the 220V bit, you won't need a separate transformer. If it's not you should be able to easily buy a 220V-input power connection in either Britain or China. The Chinese one would have the advantage of also being instantly compatible with local sockets.

Either way, a set of plug adapters is small and cheap and widely available (travel/luggage departments, or stores like Radio Shack). Not a bad idea to have one around just in case.

For hair straighteners, etc.: If you're coming as a short-term tourist, same story. Check the power rating on the appliance.
If you're coming here for a longer stay, leave all that stuff back home and just buy it here.

Your laptop should be fine, as all laptops will allow 100V-240V input and convert it to the proper voltage automatically. Just check the little box on your power cord and it will say what input voltage is allowed to be sure. Your hair straightener should be fine as well, as there is only a 10 volt difference in the electricity between the UK and Hong Kong, which is typically less than fluctuations in most power grids anyhow. You probably won't even need a plug adaptor as most of the sockets are the same in Hong Kong as they are in the UK. Here's a good website for electricity around the world:
