I think you used to be able to find out who lived in your neighborhood/street with a cross reference book. It also told what the residents occupation was. Is there still such a book and if so can it be accessed online ?

The county I live in Ohio has a website, and find the Auditors Office section, there you should be able to do a map search, by name, or by parcle. Search the your name (if you own the house, or your landlords name if you rent) and I should bring up all the information on the property, then you should be able to click on the surrounding properties. I know all counties are different but this is how ours works.

But is it helps here is the link to my County Auditors mapsearch.

Check out http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20070805121719AAunO5F&r=w#H65QXkTUEGx5OSwO9tW8 where I added several links to search engines based on data in phone book and related people reference data sources.

It depends on the size of the city, whether it is worth the trouble to compile one of these things. It is used primarily by people doing marketing.

If there is one in your community, you can usually find it in your public library. There are also private libraries that contain publications not found in the public library.

The phone book is usually on the Internet. White pages, yellow pages, business pages, the whole 9 yards.

So if you have a map of your neighborhood, you can use search engine for your street name in your city & see what's listed, then use next street name.

I do not think it can be very informative to learn that Mr & Mrs John Smith live next door. Nosy neighbors might want to know where they work, what car they drive, all sorts of privacy violations.

In my experience this kind of publication gets its information from a variety of sources that are not very reliable.

For example, if some place is asking for information on me, and it is fairly obvious I am not legally obligated to tell them the truth, and that the information will be used to send me junk advertising, I might be motivated to say that I am a retired garbage collector living on social security, that I can't afford to buy anything.

My father used to give out a different name to every place that sold him anything, then whenever he got junk advertising he knew from what organization they bought his name on a mailing list.

There is an election campaign coming up. Both political parties will be needing volunteers to go door to door with promotional literature. When I was in college eons ago, I joined the school newspaper & one of my assignments was to cover what was going on in an election campaign. I thought that, as a "journalist" I was supposed to be impartial, so I joined both the Young Democrats and the Young Republicans at the same time, then did volunteer work different days of week for each. What I learned was there was not a bit of difference between the two groups.

You can learn a lot from people's reactions to these volunteers.

Regarding your grandson, I believe there is an epidemic of lost and kidnapped kids in this country, and as a society we need to be doing a better job of helping people protect their loved ones.

If all children are finger printed, foot printed, and photographed, early in life, and this goes into some kind of data base, then if they get registered later in life for school for example, then a match can be made. In time, there can be a national DNA data base. It is unfortunate that there are opportunities to abuse any data base.

Be careful not to take law into your own hands. If you think you have located where he is being held, get help of local police authorities.

Also you can get a whole lot better answers to your question if the subject going on list of questions does not make it sound like you are a nosy neighbor. Consider a title like:

"Kidnapped child still being abused ... now what?"

Make it like a newspaper headline to grab the attention of people who might be more motivated to give suggestions, instead of making it sound like your sole interest is in how to invade people privacy.

In most states there is a sex offender registry. Contact your local police and ask of any violent offenders that may live in your area. Remember the US Constitution about privacy and the 4th Amendment.

Go out and introduce yourself to your neighbors. Bring a plate of homemade cookies with you.

Have a yard sale. Invite the whole block to have a block sale with you.
