My second cousin has autism but its only moderate. He is 4 and been trying to potty train now for about a year. He seems to really undrstand going in the potty and tries so hard to do it every time. Do you think he will ever get it or will his autism slow him? He is frustrated because he knows he can do it I think he forgets to go.

I have helped potty train over 20 children with autism. It really depends on if the child has mental retardation as well and how severe it is. The way we did it in our program was to pick a reward that was just for the potty. We set a timer for 30 minutes and every time it went off we said "potty time" and sat the child on the potty. Eventually the child will accidentally go and you give the reward. It took a while but all the childen were eventually potty trained. For non verbal children we used a board with a picture of a potty and that was the way the child would let us know when he/she needed to go. They would bring us the picure. We would use this with the timer at first so the child got the connection.

You've gotten some great answers. Another idea tyo increase the sensory input and help the child realize they need to go is to put on underpants under the pullup. It does mean more laundry, but does increase their awareness. This can also be useful for the bus ride home from school, when you can't take them every 15 minutes. If the child is high functioning enough to be "into" super heros, etc... you could get them character underpants and then make a big deal, "Oh no! You got your spidy underpants all wet!" You might also give your child some level of control in the process by letting them flush the toilet, put a sticker on a star chart, etc... Good luck.

Yes, they can definitely be potty trained, but it does usually take longer than a "typical" child and they are usually older. My son who has PDD NOS, high functioning autism, was trained a bit after turning four. It took me a good 2 months, we used PECS and a ton of hard work, but I'm proud to say that he is fully trained and has had no accidents. I worked alot with his preschool and therapists to make it happen though - maybe your cousin's parents should talk to his therapists to have them help out. Good luck!

I have a high-functioning autisic son who was fully trained by his 4th birthday. I also have a non-autisic daughter who is 3 and is now trained.

With all children, but ESPECIALLY autisic children, routine is everything. You have to be consistant. Every morning when you get up. "let's go potty! Wipe, Flush, Wash."

I made a visual picture schedule to hang in his room and we reviewed every morning. Bed, toilet, table with food, toothbrush, clothes, backpack, car.

Same thing when you get home from work. Come in, let's go potty. Every single night. Then, every hour. Let's go potty.

Hang in there, it only gets better.
