I think he should wear whatever makes him feel comfortable. As my groom pointed ou to me, he has no say on my dress therefore it's only fair if he picks his outfit.
The only thing you need to worry about is that you all match in how formally you are dressed. It would look silly if he was in tails and a bowtie and you came walking down the aisle in a tealength gown with a single flower in your hair, or if you have a big ballgown with a train and tiara and the groom showed up in jeans and a tee.
I know HTB will be a dark suit since we both agree renting a tux would be a waste and a dark color suit looks the same. Most of the guys already own a suit so we will only have to get their ties. They all know the wedding colors and can have any tie that color (my MOH has veto power if it's hideous and his best man has veto on the dress)

What is your background? Does he have any ethnic traditions? Many Scotchmen like to wear kilts. I think the dress kilt looks really cool.
What is it about a tux that you don't like? B/c there is tons of alternate ideas.
Most tuxedo rental places rent suits as well. However a better idea is to rent a less formal tuxedo. Whatever the colors of the wedding are but something like this

A tone on tone tuxedo will look like a suit
http://www.afterhours.com/styles_detail.asp?category=catalog&page=2&style=338&type=&brand=+&accesscolor=&Nav=
an ivory tuxedo would be nice with certain color schemes

Champagne or latte tuxedos will also have a less formal feel and are very modern. many brides are going with that for daytime weddings or outdoor weddings
There is also more of a morning suit in dove gray
http://www.afterhours.com/styles_detail.asp?category=catalog&page=3&style=817&type=&brand=+&accesscolor=&Nav=
A little wild but unique you could do a zoot suit
http://www.afterhours.com/styles_detail.asp?category=catalog&page=2&style=504&type=&brand=+&accesscolor=&Nav=
I've been to a theme wedding--Renaissance--and the guy had doublet and a sword. I've heard of Pirate weddings, goth weddings. I mean, there are tons of other ideas on what he could wear.
Tuxes also come in all sorts of different cuts, long tails, white dinner jackets. As it's an outdoor wedding, you could do a cuban guayabera--the full white linen suit.
You can go as unique as you want! All depends on what kind of wedding you want.

For my wedding in August 2008, my fiance is wearing a Zoot Suit instead of a tux, we are getting it made, he will also wear a hat and walk with a cane, Yes i know not traditional but him and I are very unique people and this is what HE wanted to wear. As long as he and I are comfortable in the dress (me) and suit (him) I am happy.

What he can do is wear a 100% linen jacket with black dress pants and a linen gauzy style shirt or how about chocolate brown dress pants with a white or cream gauzy type long sleeve shirt with a vest. If your dress will be ivory, then I would go with a cream ivory shirt for him, or white if your dress is white. Another idea is a linen suit all in same color. There is a great linen suit that you can have custom made in makeyourownjeans.com site. Only $99.00. Or become.com, or a great one islandimporter.com for all linen shirts, pants, informal outfits for men for their wedding. If it is a beige suit then I would go with chocolate brown shirt. Just some ideas to throw around for you to consider. You should look at dessy.com and alfredangelo.com for that informal/destination type wedding gown that would fit in if you want a little different and unique wedding.

Whats your theme? Maybe you could work around that. Kilts are popular and quite formal, but only work if you are of scottish descent. Bathers (boardshorts) if it is a beach wedding. Along the more regular line there is the Tux, lounge suit, regular suit http://www.theexecutivescloset.com/images/suitforpage.jpg, shirt and tie. If it is a casual affiar maybe even dress pants, t shirt and blazer http://www.ctshirts.co.uk/product.aspx?&ProCode=XBBNSK&progrpcode=share1.

It depends on how fancy your wedding dress is. If it's very fancy, he should wear a tux. Otherwise, a suit and tie would do just fine. As long as you are wearing a wedding dress, he should be somewhat formal, too.

purely take your FDIL (lol) procuring for an afternoon... consistent with danger she will help you stumble on something you particularly like. If all else fails, circulate with a knee length skirt with a floral trend and a shirt and lightweight jacket. It does not would desire to be a dress :) reliable success
