i'm out with a friend right now, can i call you later?

ぼくは友達といますから、後で電話かけてもいい？

is that correct or is there a better way of saying it?

Hmm... the first part of your sentence is a bit different, I guess.
"I'm out " means "to go out," right?
And you forgot to express the phrase, "right now" =”今(ima)".
So, you can say instead , "ぼくは今、友達と出かけてるから
(Boku wa ima tomodachi to dekaketeru kara).”
To some close friends, using polite ways of saying things may make them feel a bit weird in an informal situation.

The second part of your sentence sounds good.

So, your sentence will be, "ぼくは今、友達と出かけてるから、後で電話かけてもいい？
(Boku wa ima tomodachi to dekaketeru kara, ato de denwa kakete mo ii?)

It's iterally translated as:
ぼくは友達と外にいますから、後で電話かけてもいい？
boku wa tomodachi to soto ni imasu kara, atode denwa kaketemo ii?

It is the correct way to say it. Quite polite. You can also say "I am busy at the moment, can I call you back later?"

A short note to those who said 'isogashi dakedo'. The adjective isogashii cannot be followed by 'da'. It can be followed by 'desu' in order to impart formality, but 'da' does not apply.
