why do you tell people this lie? what do you gain from this?

note: you can get this question reported or not, I don't care. I just honestly want to know why you lie about the Church.

Mim - Martin Luther, the man credited for the protestants breaking away from the Catholic Church...DID believe in the basic fundamentals of Catholicism, INCLUDING praying to Mary. In fact, it was NEVER his intention to start a NEW church.

Also, NOTHING that has ever been a "DOCTRINE" in the Catholic Church has ever been CHANGED.

The questioner was NOT asking you to make up new lies about the Church...he was asking WHY people tell lies about the Church.

Eds - Catholics DO follow the New Testament. In fact, Catholics WROTE the New Testament.

tur b - A lot of people do in fact tell lies about the Church to discredit it and gain their own followers. But I also think that most of these people are just uneducated! As you can see from many of these answers, being clueless seems to be a trend.

You ask well and unambiguously, but you'll probably not get the truth.

Example: our friend the set-apart, above, has not given an answer but replied -- not for the first time on this forum -- "A Christian is commanded to observe the Lord's Supper until Christ comes again. The Catholic Church says the only one to observe the Lord's Supper has to be a member of the Catholic Church. How Christian is that? "

He is not stupid; the question is rhetorical. He knows why the Church insists that those who receive Holy Communion know and believe exactly what they are receiving, and receive worthily. (He also likely knows that many Catholics do not receive at every Mass, either, for very good reasons that are Biblically based.) It's a nice little jab at Catholicism if one doesn't know that the Church has observed this command from Day One, and furthermore taken Jesus at His word that "this is my body" -- daily, in fact, rather than having an occasional "Lord's supper".

I can think of only one reason for anti-Catholic Christians to knowingly speak falsehoods and deliberate deception about the Church: They don't want the unchurched or undecided to become Catholic.

Pretty sad behavior for brothers, which we are; even if they deny the relationship, that doesn't make it less true.

I don't have an answer for this but have wondered about it as I am a life long Catholic. It is interesting that all the "true" Christians that denigrate the Catholic Church while beating their chests with their bibles seem to forget that it was the Catholic Church somewhere in the 300's AD that established what books would be included in the New Testament, accepting the 4 gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John while excluding many other gospels written by other followers of Christ.

Kind of boggles the mind.

I'm not a fundie, but I've been called on on R&S before, so I'll go ahead and answer.

If you read through my answers you will find that anywhere and anytime someone tries to say Catholics are not Christians, I correct them.

I was raised by an ex-Catholic nun who is a wonderful Christian and who is still Catholic.

I know many wonderful Christians who practice their Christianity in the Catholic Church.

Catholics most definitely ARE Christians.

I didn't even know there were Christians who claimed the Catholic Church wasn't Christian. From a historical context, how could this possibly be true?

However, as a Catholic, I take no offense to it. It's like two blind men arguing over the color of the sky.

Not a Fundamentalist Either, But the Catholic Church( No disrespect) has a history of NOT being Christian, despite what they may say. For one the Images that continue to decorate the Place. The Bible has a Record of How God acted against his Own people namely the Nation of Israel for Image Worship. Why no sooner did Moses ascend the Mountain that the people wanted a Image of the God that rescued them from Egypt, that angered God. Yet here we are thousands of years later and we still have the same Concept of Image worship, despite what the Church may say, its still Image worship. The Laws of God have not Changed. Images are an affront to the Creator.
How about from and after the days of Charlemagne, when Church and State ruled supreme, the traffic in bones of “saints” and other so-called “holy” antiques became so riotous that even members of the Hierarchy complained that the church altars were being loaded down with bogus relics.
Says the Catholic Encyclopedia (vol. 3, page 727): “The well-known solar feast, however, of Natalis Invicti [‘Birthday of the Unconquered’], celebrated on 25 December, has a strong claim on the responsibility for our December date.”

Early Christians had nothing to do with this pagan holiday. “Christmas was not among the earliest festivals of the Church. Irenaeus and Tertullian omit it from their lists of feasts,” says the Catholic Encyclopedia. However, as time went on and the Roman Catholic Church endeavored to win over more pagans, the clergy pinned a “Christian” label on the pagan Saturnalia on December 25 and sponsored it as the “mass of Christ” or “Christ-mass”.
The list goes on and on..once again No Disrespect, and then again you did ask....

I think the main reason is the pope keeps saying they are the only true church. yet the reason Protestants Broke away was that the Catholics had many false doctrines which often are still followed today such as pray to Mary and saints we have seen recently how a pope Can change the church doctrine that only proves it was never from God. some catholics are True Christians but many who believe they are christian and saved are not that goes for many Protestants as well as most catholics.
being a christian is about knowing Jesus is in your life and you have given it to him to use.

Turbie,
The Catholics are following man's creeds rather than GOD'S New Testament Scriptures. It is written near the end of the Book of Revelation that anyone adding to or taking from the Book will be lost. Those who follow a pope who writes new dogma are also lost. Catholicism is NOT Christian it is a man-made set of creeds that change as swiftly as the winds. Have a nice day and a wonderful week. Read, study, and obey GOD'S WORD!
Thanks,
Eds

From a biblical standpoint I am pretty fundamentalist.

However, any notion that the Catholic church is not Christian is absolutely false doctrine whether espoused by one or many.

The Pope himself is known as 'The Vicar of Christ' within the hierarchy of Catholicism.
