Judging the phrasing of your question you place the war as ONLY being in Iraq... despite the claims of certain politicians who embrace the jack-*** symbol of their party... it IS a global war.

Because "embedding" with the Navy isn't as convenient or glamorous as embedding with the Army or Marines, little of what we do IS ever going to arrive on CNN or FOX or the major networks...

So aside from the tasks mentioned by others: Navy Corpsmen with the FMF, NavAir support over the country, the SEALS and Task Force that protects the Oil Platforms in the Shaat Al Arab... AND the fact that 90 % of material arrives by SEA. There ARE IA's (Individual Augmentee's) from various rates and ranks, enlisted and officer who are serving with Army and Marine units ON THE GROUND.

The Navy patrols the sea-lanes of the WORLD... we intercept weapons, loads of ammunition, and terrorists themselves. The mere PRESENCE of a CVBG (Carrier-Battle Group) in the Persian Gulf and it's approaches gives great pause to the Government of Iran.

I did 6 deployments to the Gulf during and after Op. Desert Shield/Storm... flying helicopter patrols enforcing (or trying to) Operation Southern Watch and UN Mandates.

Like yeah! being a Navy veteran myself I know the role the Navy, plays not just providing support from sea with there aircraft and bombardment when needed by there missiles from ships way out at sea but they do have special forces as well you have heard of the Navy seals right one of the most elite forces in the military and the medics that are with the U.S.Marines,are all Navy medics as well ,so the Navy pays a big role in the current conflict even if they are based way out in the ocean especially with there aircraft that is the biggest role of the Navy, why have them there if they are not being used for ground support cover and suppression of enemy fire for our troops.

The US Navy is the most powerful force on the planet. The NAVY, is so versatile, not only in war but in peacetime. Many mission are launched from naval vessels, as well as air strikes. The navy transports all US service personnel by sea. If you were an enemy of the USA, would it not be your worst fear to see a US battle group parked off your shore?

The Navy has ships in the Persian Gulf, on patrol, protecting the sea lanes and always at risk from mines and suicide planes, or boats. Navy Seals are on the ground in Afghanistan and Iraq doing hard, dangerous and difficult jobs. Navy Corpsmen are embedded with the troops as medics, and at Aid stations.

On shore they provide construction battalions that are involved with the rebuilding of Iraq and Afghanistan. They also provide explosive ordnance disposal experts who defuse various bombs and IEDs in both of those countries. Last, but not least, all of the medical personnel with the Marines in Al Anbar and Daliya Provinces in Iraq are Navy personnel. Off-shore the carrier strike groups provide ready response to missions requested by ground forces and aerial reconnaissance in both of those nations. Task Force 151 in the Arabian Sea does interdiction of the movement of terrorists by sea.
Before you ask, yes there have been Navy personnel killed in action and wounded in both of those nations as well.

They are responsible for shipping supplies such as food ,ammunition and medicine from sea and air and also provide arial support such as mapping ,spying , bombing runs and other support for the troops on land , The Marine Corp uses Navy Corpsman for all of their medical needs while in action also because they have none of their own to do it for them !

Without the Navy and its services things would be pretty grim for the other Armed Forces overseas !
