I have a mixed dog. She is good size. We recently noticed a dry patch on her back and when ever you rub or pat her there her hind leg goes wild., thumping the ground. Can I use dandruff shampoo? Or do you have another suggestion?

you could use dandruff shampoo, but you need to fix what is causing the problem in the first place. Try adding a teaspoon of Salmon or Olive oil to her food and see if that helps.

The dry spot may be something called Moist Excema or a "Hot Spot" They are really itchy, and sort of flakey if they are bad. The best way to get them to heal is shave the fur off from around the spot to let the air get to it. Some other things you can do is give your dog fish oil or salmon oil is even better. This can be found at a health food store. There is also OTC cortisone spray for dogs that could help with the itching. You can also contact a Veterinarian about stronger cortisone creams and shampoos if you cant seem to get relief for your dog. Benadryl (generic or brand name) also helps with itching. The dosage depends on the weight of your dog. Our dog is 60 pounds and we can give him 2 or 3 pills at a time up to 4 times per 24 hour period. You can give them more, but I would suggest that you contact a Veterinarian before doing so. You can use Neutrogena T gel on the itchy spot but make sure you rinse very well and I would not recommend doing it more than once a week, but I do not have a lot of information about human dandruff shampoo used on dogs. You can aslo feed your dog coconut oil or put it on the spot. With topical application they may lick it off and that could cause the condition to worsen. The coconut oil will not stop the itching, but it will alleviate the problem if it is indeed dry skin and not a "Hot Spot".

There are good dog shampoos and skin conditioners available at any pet supply place. Be sure to rinse her thoroughly after shampooing as it can cause dry skin. If it continues, or spreads, consider a visit to the vet.

First would suggest diping your pet in a dog dip. Then give it about 1/3 of a teaspoon daily of the CORN OIL liquid shortening.,or either you can purchase the Derm Caps and give one daily. The dip and Derm caps can be purchased at the following site if your local feed outlet doesn't have.

It sounds as though she has fleas. The dry patch could be from her biting her back. Frontline flea drops will help get rid of the fleas as well as flea sprays. Benadryl, that adults take for allergies, will help relieve the itching.
