The computer reads how much fuel you're consuming and factors that into your speed. It calculates mpg based on this information. This is for active mpg, while you're driving. If you've finished your trip and your computer has this function, it can read miles traveled and fuel consumed to determine an overall trip miles per gallon.

Top contributors are often so lame. They contribute a lot of fluff. No substance. Your car has a computer that electronically monitors miles and fuel flow. Dividing miles traveled by gallons consumed is your miles per gallon. Because your car's computer is constantly monitoring these two pieces of data, it can give you a real-time miles per gallon number, instead of the average miles per gallon number that some "top contributors" come up with.

The computer controlled fuel injection tracks fuel consumption. The odometer tracks distance. The car then simply calculates fuel use per unit of distance travelled.

Miles/gallon = (miles per hour) / (gallons/hour).

The car measures its speed in miles per hour, measures its fuel consumption in gallons/hour , and divides one by the other.

The gallons per hour is probably originally measured in cc per second, which the car then coverts to gallons per hour.
