try and make things fun and educational...try taking them to a science center where they can witness things first hand and see how stuff works...also you can also create projects to help them learn things at home...children love to learn new things and figure out how something works...try building a model airplane or rocket with them...

You can lead a horse to water, but can you make it drink?
The AGE of the child is going to be a big factor on what you do, but here is a GENERAL idea.
For the learning of the alphabet, make some homemade playdough and shape it into letters or go on a letter hunt.
Let the child help you in the kitchen as this teaches both Math, color recognition, following directions, reading. The same could be said for letting the child help with chores and Grocery Shopping and caring for pets.
Use your imagination.
You can't MAKE them learn, but you CAN inspire them.

Repetition... works especially well with young children. Read the same book over and over or sing the alphabet song over and over....
Make it fun and exciting for them. Use something the like to remember. Count the steps, when you are using them, or count the crackers at snack time. Throw the blue ball in the basket first....
Active play works well also... do silly dances to educational songs.
just a few examples for you....

You don't MAKE a child learn, to begin with. You FACILITATE their learning ability.
