I have 3 painting by an artist that signs his name as H. Schmid. The H stands for Hans. Two of the paintings were done in 1949 the third one doesn’t have a date. They are landscape paintings. How can I find out more on H. Schmid? I’ve gone to antique dealer and the artist is listed in some databases. He appears to have been born in 1903 in Germany. Some paintings have been sold at auction according to the antique dealer I went to, but without any dollar amounts listed. But there is no other information about the artist in the databases. The paintings were my grandparents, then my mothers, and now mine. I’ve done some research at my library and still can’t find out anything other than when he was born.

It was my understanding that Hans Schmid was born in 1906. His works are not very common here in the states.

I went to Yahoo Search on my homepage, typed in Hans Schmid Paintings, hit the search button and got thousands of hits. There are two known Hans Schmids. One is a film maker, the other an artist.

Anyway, the point is you shouldn't have any problems, unless you're lazy, finding out the values of your paintings yourself. In a few short minutes I found out a lot more than just his birthdate and you can, too, by doing what I just did.

I would do it for you but it's way too beautiful a Sunday morning here and I would rather spend the time outdoors.

You can start your search here:

i was readreading your question and had a thought, i dont know where you would find out other prices of his paintings but it would probably be worth a shot contacting someone with abit of art culture on his home soil, usually would be able to unravel alot more if you go to the origins. hope it helps...
